Surviving and Thriving in Active Cancer Treatment

.

When you’re in active cancer treatment—whether surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation—your body is under sustained stress and you go into “survival mode”. Pain, fatigue, nausea, changes in appearance—all of them impact upon how you feel moment to moment, all of them putting limits on what you can do day to day. Even when the worst of the treatment seems over, your recovery can feel uneven, with good days followed by setbacks you can’t anticipate or control.

These feelings are common and expected. They reflect the reality of how survival mode sets in when going through cancer treatment. Eir Centre offers a series of individualized services to give your body, mind, and soul the strength they need to bear what feels too heavy to carry alone.

Services to help you thrive in active cancer treatment include:

  • Doctor’s appointments to address treatment side effects and sleep hygiene (covered by OHIP)

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I)

  • Restorative movement with gentle yoga that meets your body where it is, delivered at Eir Centre with the option of online classes

  • Nutritionist consultation to optimize your diet in the setting of chemotherapy and a compromised immune system

  • Sound Massage or Reiki to provide passive relief from anxiety and emotional distress
